Happy Monday!  Last night I created a Flipgrid tutorial for our band parents and students for the upcoming school year!  I widely use Flipgrid in the classroom so that I can hear the students play their instruments individually. It is also a great way to facilitate classroom discussions/assignments virtually!  If you are unfamiliar with Flipgrid, take a moment to watch my Screencast.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!  Make it a great week!

"Great things are done by a series of small things brought together." - Van Gogh

Happy Sunday everyone!  I hope you had a great weekend.  We are off to a great start with our Summer marching band rehearsals!  I love seeing everyone in person and appreciate all of your flexibility with our new procedures and efforts within our rehearsal times.  Remember to check in to our MS Teams page for recordings of the marching show.  Carve out practice time each week between rehearsals so that we can continue to improve and make progress.  Keep up the great work!
This week in my Summer class we explored making YouTube playlists to help supplement learning in the classroom.  I created a playlist on breathing exercises.  You can check it out here:  youtu.be/sCEj3R_26wY.  You can also "like" and "subscribe" to my YouTube channel.  I am really excited to continue to build playlists that can help you with many different facets of music including theory, performance, and even exploring composers, ensembles, and musicians!  I'm eager to hear what you think about the breathing exercises!  By effectively learning how to breathe (or by improving your breathing/how you use your air), you can really improve your sound as a musician!  Check it out and let me know what you think!  Have a great week!

Welcome!!

Welcome to my blog!  I'm so excited to share thoughts, links, and other digital media here.  Check back often as I anticipate using my blog space to communicate with students, parents, and our community!
We are preparing to begin our first summer rehearsals on Thursday, July 2.  Mrs. Rummings & I met with Mr. Houseknecht (our athletic director) and Mrs. Schonewolf (our pandemic coordinator) to discuss summer rehearsal preparations.  We will be emailing our rehearsal plan this week.  I am excited to get our show on the field and look forward to returning to the band room again.  While we will need to exercise social distancing, sanitize often, and rehearse in small groups, returning to perform will be a touch of normalcy that I miss.

How can I best prepare for our first Summer rehearsal?
--  Please check out our MS Teams pages for your marching music!  Remember to access Teams using your email address as ("@mounties.k12.pa.us).  Part assignments will be made after our first rehearsals.
--  Listen to the show and become familiar with the music.  Links are posted on our MS Teams pages.
--  Bring a pencil (or two), your own water bottle, music, and a positive attitude to rehearsals.
--  Wear athletic sneakers and socks to every rehearsal.
--  Wear sunscreen and light-colored, breathable clothing.
How will rehearsals be different than the past?
-- We will be starting our early July rehearsals in small group sessions.
--  We will be sanitizing our hands often and will sanitize the band room space between small group rehearsals.
--  We will be outside with smaller groups for a shorter period of time.
--  Everyone will need to bring their own supplies and accessories.  (ie. Water bottles, reeds, oils, mouthpieces, sticks, pencils, flip folders, etc...
--  Our progress will largely be dependent on how hard we work in less time.  I am extremely optimistic that the quality of our performances will not suffer due to the shorter rehearsal times and smaller group rehearsals.
The band staff is excited to work with our "newbies" and returning members!  We look forward to navigating our Summer rehearsals together!  Please do not hesitate to contact myself or any staff member at any time if you have any concerns or questions.  I can always be reached via email at jkaledas@swasd.org.  I cannot wait to see you (& hear you play/watch you twirl!) on July 2!  See you SOON!
